I truly know that this movie isn’t meant to be a mockery or infantilize autism. I love you SIA and I know you made this with a good heart and soul and for a greater good. I know this movie was incredibly damaging for the autistic community, especially the caricatures and Maddie not being neurodivergent herself, but I will say Leslie's role was well rounded and he's such an amazing singer that it makes me sad this movie couldn't have had a better production in terms of representation because this song is beautiful

@Danjo i get it. after watching the film a few times over i realized how many flaws it actually had- besides the fact they didnt cast an autistic person the movies just really messy in general :/ i mean, the restraint scenes arent needed, music isnt even the main character, and the music scenes (the dancing scenes with songs n stuff) were all annoying except one. i watched the movie, i like all movies so it generally isnt that bad (and spent money on it so kinda forced myself to like it) but i feel a lot of the things weren't needed and they couldve done a really good job and made a really good movie, with some decent research and longer spent on the movie

@ᗰOOᔕᕼᖇOOᗰ ᗰᗩᖇ Having a neurotypical person portray a neurodivergent person is the least of the issues with the film. In addition, Music (the character) isn't an actual character as much as she is simply a prop, a contrivance for the other characters to worry about. The film glorifies prone restraint, which has a demonstrable history of killing autistic people, as "crushing with love"(wtf!?). Also the music videos that are tangentially dispersed throughout the film are apparently supposed to represent Music's inner consciousness but they are incredibly divorced from the actual experiences of autistic people. They don't wander through life hallucinating colorful dance numbers. Outside of problems w/ autistic representation, it's a poorly written basic story we've all seen before and it leans heavily on clichés and stereotypes. It's cringe worthy bargain bin inspiration porn. You can tell the dancers and artists worked hard and had a lot of fun though, so it's a shame it all got ruined by the myopically contrived film and Sia's doubling down against criticism.
